Current ChAMPions

Ilektra Andoni

Department: Chemistry

Advisor/Lab: Reg Penner

Research Project Area:
Exploring the future of energy storage through use of nanowires as electrodes in batteries and supercapacitors. The project focuses on MnO2 which is a hybrid energy storage material that is capable of storing charge capacitively and Faradaically, as a change in the redox state of the Mn centers. The challenge is to prepare MnO2 nanomaterials that charge and discharge rapidly while also producing the highest possible energy density.

Research Project Area:
Developing new solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance instrumentation by building the first triple-resonance switched angle spinning probe which will be capable of high resolution spectra for structure determination and selective reintroduction of information important to dynamics. This probe will be used to study protein-membrane interactions, specifically with proteins recently discovered in the Martin lab from carnivorous plants that have promise for impactful applications as non-toxic pesticides or as antimicrobials for medical devices.
